The University of Pittsburgh's Division of Philanthropic & Alumni Engagement (PAE) cultivates relationships with contributors, alumni, and other constituents on behalf of the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC, generating support for teaching, research, and care. See PAE's site for more details: pae.pitt.edu. PAE is seeking an Assistant Director of Development (ADOD) for the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business (KATZ) and College of Business Administration (CBA) to join a progressive team within our Individual Giving Schools and Centers. The ADOD will be part of a University-wide development and alumni relations team focusing primarily on Pitt Business alumni. This position will report to the Director of Development, Katz/CBA. The ADOD is responsible for raising gifts at the $10,000 and above levels for KATZ and CBA. This position will manage a portfolio of major gift prospects. This involves identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. The ADOD will manage movement of leadership annual giving donors through the pipeline and lead strategy as it relates to fundraising for Pitt Business. The ADOD will manage Pitt Business young alumni giving, and, in consultation with the Office of Annual Programs, annual giving initiatives for Pitt Business. The ADOD will support the Director of Development and Executive Director of Development in matters as requested.

The ADOD must possess and demonstrate initiative and leadership; superior oral and written skills with an ability to build a strong case for support and persuade; strong organizational skills; and an exceptional ability to communicate with a variety of University alumni, donors, faculty, staff, senior leadership, and friends. Knowledge of and experience with the mission of higher education and the ability to translate that mission into ways that engage and inspire donors and alumni is strongly preferred. This position requires occasional travel and occasional evening and weekend work. Flexible hybrid may be available for this position.


Job Summary

Leads programmatic elements and drives strategy of a comprehensive fundraising program, which may involve executing components of larger, integrated school-based programs or small, unit-based programs. Oversees and executes major gift fundraising, a portfolio of donors, executing gift solicitations to closure, and coordinating programs for leadership annual giving prospects. Develops and drives major and leadership gift strategies and initiatives. Assists in a major communications plans and writes communication pieces.


Essential Functions
  • Outstanding communicator and manager of relationships.
  • Strong complex organizational, analytical, and communication skills and ability to build trust amongst constituents.
  • Ability to work and travel independently with an expectation of at least six trips to meet with university alumni and or friends face to face per calendar year.
  • Ability to attend events both on and off campus with occasional evening and weekend work.
  • Strategic, innovative, organized, able to juggle multiple priorities simultaneously and consistently meet deadlines.
  • Strong computer skills a must, including ability to conduct and initiate virtual meetings with various platforms (Microsoft Teams, Zoom, etc.), as well as knowledge of development databases and Microsoft Office Suite.

Physical Effort

Moderate physical effort required. May be required to stand/move for several hours at a time. May be required to move objects up to 50 pounds with or without assistance of equipment. Physical ability to travel to meet with donors is a must.
