Under general direction of the Principal Investigator, the Assistant Scientist provides technical support by performing scientific experiments within the research lab. Independently handles experiments or small research projects requiring advanced knowledge and experience in a specific scientific area or discipline. Maintains records of data and may be involved in training graduate and medical students in research methods and procedures

Responsibilities include: Performing animal surgery, behavior assessment, and care relating to gene therapy for spinal cord injury; tissue sectioning and immunohistochemistry for analysis of tissue; managing the production and quality control of AAV and lentiviral production for the Smith lab and a few other labs at Temple, requiring good manufacturing practice to produce high quality recombinant viruses; responsible for training others in the production and purification of these viruses; maintaining laboratory notebook with precise experimental records, protocols and analysis. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree and two (2) years of experience in a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills and Abilities:
*Working knowledge of applicable computer software and applicable professional principles
*Strong background in procedures/experiments detailed above.
*Strong organizational and record keeping skills to record experiment results and analyze data

Preferred:
*surgical, behavioral, molecular, and immunohistological experience
