The Division of Infectious Diseases is seeking a Senior Laboratory Specialist for the Pitt Men's Study as part of the national MACS/WIHS Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS). The Pitt Men's Study is a confidential research study of the natural history of HIV/AIDS, funded by the National Institutes of Health that has been ongoing in Pittsburgh since 1984. The ideal candidate will be invested in the goals of the Pitt Men's Study, have 3-5 years of basic laboratory experience, and preferably experience working with biological samples. The individual will be maneuvering 450lb LN2 tanks via a dolly.
Responsibilities will include overseeing research projects, personnel involved in projects, budgetary discretion related to research projects, and management of a complex stream of laboratory supplies crucial to progress on integrated projects. The incumbent must exhibit strengths in the conduct and execution of scientific projects as well as managerial foresight. Responsibilities include but are not limited to coordinating research activities, enforcing laboratory safety guidelines and proper chemical/biohazard waste disposals, budgeting, purchasing laboratory supplies, inventories and equipment maintenance. Other managerial responsibilities will include interviewing staff candidates, training new staff, and assigning and allocating tasks among students and other staff members in the lab.
Conducts complex laboratory experiments, high-level tests, and a variety of routine to complex scientific tasks. Performs data and specimen collection and processing as well as equipment maintenance and set up. Ensures adherence to all established protocols and regulatory practices. Mentors' student workers and lower-level technicians.
This position requires a high level of mobility, manual dexterity, visual acuity, and basic computer skills. Must have the ability to be flexible and manage competing priorities as assigned by supervisor. Discretion in working with people living with HIV and in LGBTQ community.
This position requires that the applicant travel between laboratories, campus buildings, and to sit or stand at a laboratory bench for extended periods of time. This position requires the ability to maneuver LN2 tanks (450lbs) via a dolly.
