The Information Networking Institute (INI) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) educates and develops engineers through in information networking, security and mobile, as well as AI and IoT engineering across two program locations: Pittsburgh and Silicon Valley. Established in 1989 in response to a demand from industry for professionals skilled in both computer science and engineering, the INI has to become an integral part of Carnegie Mellon's College of Engineering.

Taught by world-class faculty, the INI's rigorous technical curriculum incorporates business and policy perspectives. Through flexible, interdisciplinary curricula, INI students can customize their program experiences to help them realize their career aspirations. Beyond the rich academic experience, the INI's vibrant meta-curriculum offers distinct opportunities outside of the classroom to help tackle problems, pilot new ideas and develop solutions for industry and government. The INI has more than 2,700 alumni that serve high-powered companies, tech start-ups and government agencies, always returning to their home away from home at the INI to recruit, mentor and inspire current students to follow their path to success.

CMU seeks aDirector of Career Services and Employer Relations to join the INI. This position is based in Pittsburgh with an option for a hybrid work schedule and reports directly to the INI Senior Director of Strategic Operations. The person in this role works closely with the entire INI team in Pittsburgh and on the Carnegie Mellon University-Silicon Valley (CMU-SV) campus to create and maintain a career development program and an engagement strategy for INI graduate students. This role is closely integrated with the Career and Professional Development Center (CPDC) team under the guidance of its Senior Associate Dean and Director.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Managing all phases of Career Services activities of the interdisciplinary technical master's programs of the INI.

  • Working directly with students to guide them with career planning and job searches, as well as developing and implementing a strategic employer-relations plan.

  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with key industry and government contacts, alumni, faculty, staff and students.

  • Crafting and implementing the career services strategy for the INI graduate-level students, including professional development and internship and job search preparation.

  • Working closely with the CPDC Employer Development team and the INI Director of Strategic Relations to develop and implement a comprehensive employer development and outreach plan.

  • Assisting in the expansion of existing recruiting relationships by identifying the talent needs of INI's recruiting partners and INI graduate students who can fill those specific needs.

  • Supporting the Principal Investigator of the NSF-funded Scholarship for Service program coordinating student support, government relations, and necessary reporting.

  • Representing the INI at job fairs, events and conferences.

  • Other duties as assigned.

You should demonstrate:

  • Ability to communicate with and support students from various backgrounds, especially international students.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop, plan, market and implement innovative student-oriented programs and interact with students and employers from a wide range of backgrounds.

  • Established record of strong leadership capability and excellent problem-solving skills as well as exceptional interpersonal, communication and negotiating skills.

  • Interest and enthusiasm for working with INI graduate engineering students to help them with their career and professional development goals.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal department, campus stakeholders and university-level career advisors.

  • Excellent knowledge of Career Services and an understanding of university policies and procedures.

  • Strong attention to detail, with experience evaluating and reporting on student outcomes.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field (i.e. College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Engineering, Human Resources) or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience is required. A master's degree in a related field is preferred.

  • 3-5 years of experience in a career counseling role is required. Previous experience working in an engineering, recruiting or higher education career services leadership role as well as experience working with graduate and international students in a student services environment is strongly preferred.
