The Senior Certified Ophthalmic Assistant is an advanced-level position including a wide variety of clerical, technical, and patient related functions under minimal supervision. The Senior COA performs all of the duties of the associate level ophthalmic technician with greater independence, including clinic flow management, patient check-in; medical record review, preparation for the visit, patient education, assistance with medical examinations, treatments, and procedures, coordination and scheduling of tests, appointments, and surgeries, coordination of area work assignments, protocol review and update, and quality assurance checks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS IF HIRED PRIOR TO APRIL 1, 2022:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. High school diploma or equivalent required.

2. Certification as an Ophthalmic Assistant obtained through JCAHPO required upon hire.

3. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

EXPERIENCE:

1. Two (2) years' experience as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. 1. Assigns duties and coordinates clinical services.

2. Keeps informed of special physician orders concerning patients.

3. Investigates and resolves complaints or refers unusual problems to supervisor.

4. Responds to patient teaching opportunities to enhance patient compliance and safety.

5. Identify family involvement in patient compliance.

6. Participates in problem solving and decision making in the clinic. Acts to ensure staffing and patient needs are met.

7. Obtain and record accurate patient histories to include chief complaint, present ocular status, ocular history, family history, past and present medical history, medications and allergies, and vital signs if needed.

8. Obtain and accurately record visual acuity measurements on adults, children, illiterate patients and infants.

9. Accurately measure and record spectacle prescriptions, using both manual and automated devices.

10. Performance of tonometry in measurement of intraocular pressures using a variety of measuring devices.

11. Perform and record accurately the Schirmers tear test and tear break up time.

12. Performance of basic extraocular muscle screening to include, Titmus stereo test.

13. Perform and accurately record color vision screening tests.

14. Perform Visual Field Testing, lensometry and keratometry

15. Perform and accurately describe pupillary function as to light and accommodation.

16. Perform and record electrophysiologic tests (ERG,VEP,EOG).

17. Conduct and accurately record formal and informal visual fields to include confrontation, Amsler Grid, Goldmann Perimetry, Humphrey Automated perimetry, OCT.

18. Perform and accurately record IOL calculations, corneal topography and other related diagnostic testing.

19. Application of eye patches and ocular dressings as directed by the physician (occlusive therapy, pressure patching, etc.).

20. Assist in minor ocular surgical procedures and laser treatments as directed including informed consent, and surgical site identification

21. Under the direct supervision of a physician, instill ocular preparations as required including solutions, suspensions, ointments, and therapeutic agents and educate patients on medications, drug reactions, an side effects.

22. Provide contact lenses measurement, fitting, and patient instruction

23. General maintenance of ophthalmic equipment, examination lane maintenance, and overall clinical maintenance as directed by supervisor.

24. Gather data for purposes of process improvement and improvement of clinic flow

25. May scribe for provider when needed including order placement and protocol orders. Maintains confidentiality

26. Provide patient education regarding anatomy and physiology of general ocular diseases, test, medications, procedures and treatments

27. Triage patient calls, collaborate with provider, and provide patient care instructions as defined by the provider.

28. Assist in peer interviews, training and education of new testing assistants and COA's

1. Work requires strength and /or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing for long intervals ,frequent walking, and carrying materials or pushing equipment weighing 40 + lbs.

2. Vision correctable to at least 20/30 in one eye.

1. Normal outpatient clinical environment. Incumbent may be exposed to biohazards and communicable disease.

2. The incumbent will work in the presence of ophthalmic lasers frequently and be required to wear protective eye equipment

3. May work with blood, lab specimens, and other patient bodily fluids that require universal precautions

4. Travel to offsite clinics may be required

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. The ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a high volume clinic

2. Ability to operate ophthalmic equipment and computers.

3. Analytical skills are desirable to complete the technical aspects of patient examinations.
