THE POSITION

The Office of Mental Health is looking for a Full Time Caseworker 2. This position provides administrative base service unit services to adults 18 years of age and older who are severely mentally ill. Please join our team and help us make a difference in the lives of others.







DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position is for an Administrative Base Service Unit Caseworker 2. This position will oversee the complete process for Mental Health hearings held under the Mental Health Procedures Act and will encompass other base service unit caseworker duties.

Services provided include coordinating Mental Health Commitment Hearings, attending the MH hearings, and processing the paperwork post hearing. Other services within this unit include screening, intake, liability updates, assessment, overseeing housing programs, referrals, coordination of treatment services, maintaining database, coordinating outpatient commitment hearings and monitoring commitments, follow-up services, intervention, crisis management, and information and referral.

Job responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Act as the Mental Health Hearing county liaison to the community which may include written or verbal contact with lawyers, judges, hospital social workers, doctors, the county jail, etc.
  • Keep an updated protocol book and collect and manage data related to court work. Communicate current updated information to the supervisor and other court work staff. Work with other court work staff to coordinate back up coverage. This involves acting as a mentor to and training new staff.
  • Determine current insurance status for of individuals. Assist individuals by determining insurance and financial entitlements and making referrals as appropriate. May include assisting individuals with insurance, financial, SSI, SSDI, medical assistance forms, etc., as needed.
  • Monitor provider agencies involved in county funded mental health services including: vocational program, supportive housing programs, psychiatric rehab programs, etc.
Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday-Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
    • Work hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays will be 7:15 AM to 3:15 PM.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Six months of experience as a County Caseworker 1; or
  • Successful completion of the County Social Casework Intern program; or
  • A bachelor's degree with a social welfare major; or
  • A bachelor's degree which includes or is supplemented by 12 college credits in sociology, social welfare, psychology, gerontology, criminal justice, or other related social sciences and one year of professional social casework experience in a public or private social service agency; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which includes 12 college credits in sociology, social welfare, psychology, gerontology, criminal justice, or other related social sciences.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within two months of graduating with a qualifying degree/credits.

Other Requirements:
  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • Hiring preference for this vacancy will be given to candidates who live within Berks, Carbon, Monroe, Northampton, Schuylkill and Lehigh counties. If no eligible candidates who live within these counties apply for this position, candidates who reside in other counties may be considered.

Legal Requirements:
  • You must pass a background investigation.
  • This position falls under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.
    • Under the Law, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports including, but not limited to, PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
