Deadline

Description

Carnegie Mellon Architecture (CM_A) is seeking an architecture, urban design, planning, and/or real estate development professional to teach a graduate course on the fundamentals of real estate development, the interdependence of real estate development and design, and the social, economic and regulatory contexts in which development takes place.

Course Description

The course should introduce the systems, processes, and many stakeholders through which architectural projects get imagined, produced, and valued. It should cover project team members and the phases of a project; market research and programming; site constraints and zoning restrictions; basic project budgeting and how available capital affects development projects. The course should include a financial component that will introduce students to the basic techniques of property valuation, project budgeting, pro forma analysis, sourcing of financing, and investment analysis.

The course should tie into the School's
initiatives by discussing how real estate development relates to climate change, artificial intelligence, and social justice through ideas such as land use, affordable housing, segregation, and economic inequality. Because this course typically includes many international students, it should also include some discussion of development in other countries.

The semester's effort will culminate in the execution of a team case study of a recent and/or currently underway project. The study components may include a basic market analysis, program evaluation, schematic design, project cost estimates, pro forma analysis, and evaluation of financial feasibility. Students will make a final presentation to the class and possibly, visiting professionals.

Students will have the first two weeks of class to select 9 or 12 CMU credits; 12 credit students will complete additional work. The course is scheduled to meet in person on CMU's Pittsburgh campus for 14 weeks, from August 27 - December 5, 2024, with classes on Tuesdays & Thursday mornings from 8:00 am - 9:20 am. In addition to class time, students are expected to do about 6-9 hours of homework per week, depending on the credits.

The course is required for all 2nd-year graduate students in the School's Master of Urban Design (MUD) program, and all 1st-year students in the Master of Architecture - Engineering - Construction Management (AECM) graduate program. The course may also include graduate students from the Tepper School of Business and the Heinz School of Public Policy. We are expecting about 40 students total. TAs will be provided to help with class logistics and grading. A modest stipend to aid in course development in summer 2024 will be provided, in addition to the Fall semester compensation commensurate with experience.

School Description

Carnegie Mellon Architecture is committed to providing a deep immersion in the discipline of architecture. We have set ourselves the goal of preparing our students to meet the major challenges facing architectural design and the built environment in the 21st century; namely climate change, artificial intelligence and social justice. We place design and technological competency at the center of our pedagogy across the School's many programs, including the B. Arch, M. Arch, post-professional Master's (both MS and studio-based) and the doctoral programs.

Our student body totals over 400 undergraduate and graduate students, and is situated within the College of Fine Arts, alongside the Schools of Art, Design, Drama and Music. Our university is classified as an "R1: Doctoral University - Highest Research Activity" institution. As such, a wide range of transdisciplinary educational and research opportunities can be created at the school, college and/or university levels.

Carnegie Mellon Architecture is a research-based department, situated within the College of Fine Arts and the program is intensified by a university culture of interdisciplinary innovation and creative inquiry. Our undergraduate and graduate degree programs prepare students to be excellent, discipline-defining design-thinkers in diverse global contexts. We believe that architectural excellence demands both rigorous training in fundamentals and the development of unique expertise - whether the sciences, the humanities, engineering, or computation. Though each of our students graduates with intensive architecture knowledge, no two graduates leave with the same education.

Our programs take advantage of:

  • Our position within one of the world's leading research and entrepreneurship institutions at the interdisciplinary intersection of technology, the arts, and the humanities;

  • Specialized facilities and centers like the Robert L. Preger Intelligent Workplace, dFAB Lab, Code Lab, Remaking Cities Institute, and the IDeATe Physical Computing Lab;

  • The context of our dynamic, post-industrial city of Pittsburgh as a laboratory for inquiry and action.
