Job Description

The Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) is a living laboratory where we investigate the relationship between computer technology, human activity, and society. Founded in 1993, the HCII is a place where we work to understand and create technology that harmonizes with and improves human capabilities, goals, and social environments through interdisciplinary research and education in design, computer science, and behavioral and social sciences. We research how people work, play, and communicate within groups, organizations, and social structures, then we design, create, and evaluate technologies and tools to support human and social activities.

The Data Interaction Group at Carnegie Mellon University is hiring a Machine Learning + Data Visualization research assistant (RA). The RA will create interactive visualization systems to contribute to the Group's research, primarily focused on human-AI interaction. The RA will also assist with the development and implementation of research tools and collaborate in writing research papers. The candidate should have back-end experience with Python (and optionally machine learning frameworks) and be willing to learn front-end skills, such as Streamlit, Svelte.js or D3.js.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Follows research plans in order to collect, record, and manipulate research data. Maintains accurate and detailed research records and files.
  • Performs library research and field explorations.
  • Performs basic data analysis in order to product reports. Documents results and processes.
  • May test software prototypes. May interact with research subjects in order to perform job functions.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Research and data entry experience.
  • Excellent communication and analytical skills.
