Job Description

Utz Quality Foods is seeking an EHS Specialist in Hanover, PA. The Environmental, Health, & Safety (EHS) Specialist assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of comprehensive EHS programs for the assigned plant. This includes developing and maintaining policies and procedures that promote continuous improvement and meet or exceed compliance with all applicable federal, state, local laws, regulations and standards in a manner consistent with sound business practices. This position involves collaborating with various departments to identify risks, develop strategies for mitigation, and promote a culture of safety within the organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement the facility EHS management systems, including employee participation, employee health, hazard analyses, safe operating procedures, training, risk management, loss control, spill prevention, hazardous waste, DOT hazardous materials, emissions, emergency planning (EPCRA) and all other key system elements.
  • Inspect/audit machines and equipment for accident prevention.
  • Maintain acceptable levels of safety, emergency response and first aid equipment.
  • Conduct regular inspections and audits of facilities, equipment, and processes to identify potential hazards and ensure adherence to safety protocols, working with Plant Leadership to reduce the risk of employee injury.
  • Implement provisions of disseminating information including signs, posters, barriers, performance measures and advice to warn employees of potential or actual safety hazards and/or to prevent access to areas where hazardous conditions exist.
  • Maintain a current working knowledge of EHS regulations and laws to provide expertise for EHS assessments, capital projects, work orders, and general EHS related problem solving at the site, regional and corporate level as needed.
  • Recommend and implement programs to ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal environmental regulations including documentation, reporting, permits, manifests, training, and policy development.
  • Administer EHS training and communication programs (i.e. HAZCOM, HAZMAT, Forklift etc.).
  • Assist in the development, administration, and maintenance of EHS compliance and continuous improvement program elements. Coordinate with applicable external regulatory agencies and coordinate and follow-up on EHS audits to ensure satisfactory compliance. Ensure all required reports are completed and submitted as required.
  • Extract and manipulate data from business systems for environmental reporting. Complete and submit periodic reports for air, storm water, wastewater, hazardous waste, community right to know programs and other relevant media.
  • Record and investigate all incidents of injury, work related illness or damage to property, partnering with the necessary parties to resolve any identified corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence and meet loss-reduction goals.
  • Orchestrate monthly Safety Audits of the facility, equipment, and personnel to ensure compliance with all Regulations and Company Policies and ensure a safe workplace, partnering with necessary parties to resolve any identified corrective actions.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in environmental, health, and safety management, with demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated experience changing safety culture at a company or facility.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and other applicable industry EHS standards.
  • Experience working with regulatory agencies and external auditors.
  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate performance metrics and outcomes.
  • Superior communication skills - verbal and written.
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills with the ability to develop multiple solutions to an issue and make valid recommendations for resolution.
  • Able to understand and execute processes including recognizing customer needs, communicating process changes, measuring and assessing success and identifying areas of improvement.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to develop and implement environmental and safety policies, programs, and training.
  • Experience with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and ERP computer applications.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing practices and processes.
  • Ability to adjust work hours as needed.
  • Able to climb ladders and stairs and the ability to lift moderately heavy items such as test equipment or materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to move between tasks and projects on short notice and to quickly change priorities based on customer and department needs, while still meeting project deadlines.
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with all levels within and outside the organization from corporate, regional and plant management to supervisors and hourly employees in the production areas.
  • Able to work well in a team environment or independently.
