Job Description

SUMMARY

The Pharmacist in Charge is responsible for the operational compliance and management of the Pharmacy and all associated operations. Plans, organizes, and implements pharmacy policies and procedures that ensures the pharmacy provides optimal pharmaceutical services, that meet all legal, accreditation, and certification requirements. Collaborates with other departments to determine needs, resolve problems, and improve processes, that promote patient safety in accordance with accepted standards of good pharmacy practice. Ensures that all pharmacy staff is currently licensed/certified/registered and have adequate Continuing Education credits. Develops competency assessment programs that ensure all pharmacy staff perform all duties and responsibilities with utmost efficiency and safety, while complying with all policies, procedures, and standards established at Covetrus.

Mentors and guides the development of pharmacy personnel to ensure employees are being challenged and inspired to reach their goals. Supports the mission, vision, and values of the company.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Operates and manages the Pharmacy:
    • Responsible for the establishment and adherence to best practice methods for safe and accurate dispensing and distribution of medications.
    • Responsible for receiving, verifying prescriptions, and applying clinical knowledge when fulfilling prescription orders.
    • Works collaboratively with other departments and pharmacy teams.
    • Liaises with other department managers to convey information to and from the pharmacy which would impact the order processing and shipping methods/timing to customers.

  • Oversite and adherence of the Pharmacy Quality and Training Programs
    • Conducts annual review of pharmacy's policies and procedures to ensure applicability to current pharmacy regulations and operational workflow.
    • Ensures pharmacy personnel adhere to approved policies and procedures.
    • Ensures competency of pharmacy staff through the administration of pharmacy on-boarding and continuous training programs.
    • Leads and oversees the site process for root cause analysis and corrective and preventive action (CAPA) associated with non-conformity or quality related issues associated with the practice of pharmacy. Responsible for leading site in delivery of quality metrics.

  • Supervises pharmacy personnel:
    • Guides, directs, and coaches staff in the overall functionality and effectiveness of the pharmacy.
    • Oversees the hiring of pharmacy team members and when necessary, handles employee concerns and discipline as needed.
    • Develops departmental and individual performance goals. Completes performance appraisals, conducts performance conferences, determines appropriate compensatory rewards, and handles discharges.
    • Sets departmental productivity, accuracy, and safety goals, tracks progress toward goals, and communicates progress to employees.
  • Regulatory
    • Uphold multi-state pharmacy and pharmacist licensure, accreditations, and certifications to ensure business continuity and patient care.
    • Maintains a working knowledge of current on pharmacy laws and regulations as well as industry standards through participation in professional memberships, attending meetings, seminars, lectures, and reading journals.
    • Ensures the pharmacy is in compliance with the regulations of all applicable government agencies regulating drug and pharmacy storage, distribution, and transportation, such as OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency), and DOT.
    • Ensures the pharmacy complies with vendor pharmacovigilance requirements as determined by signed agreements.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Doctor of Pharmacy or BS Degree in Pharmacy.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Must be a Licensed Pharmacist with Current State licensure, in good standing with the resident state of the Pharmacy and other states as required.
  • Licensure in those non-resident states requiring PIC (Pharmacist In Charge) to hold licensure.

  • Reading comprehension - ability to understand written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents. Ability to comprehend basic principles, theories and laws, policies and procedures that pertain to pharmacy.
  • Critical thinking - using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems. Ability to pay attention to details.
  • Mathematics - using mathematics to solve problems.
  • Technical- proficient on keyboard and operating a computer terminal with multiple software systems. Ability to utilize PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and pharmacy equipment to perform duties.
  • Communication - ability to communicate both verbally and in written format in a professional manner with all levels of the organization.
  • Dependability - exhibit punctuality and low absenteeism.
