Description

This position provides professional nursing care to patients at SIU Medicine North Dirksen Express Care in Springfield, IL. This acute walk-in clinic is open seven days a week. Nursing care assists SIU Family Medicine Faculty, Residents, and Advanced Practice Providers. The individual must be able to act independently, considering a variety of medical situations and medical emergencies.

Examples of Duties

PATIENT CARE 90%
1. Provide professional nursing to patients including but not limited to taking vitals, obtaining blood pressure, screening vision, assessing skin and tissue, ear lavage, managing wound care, removing and caring for sutures, and assisting with medication.
2. Demonstrate competency in conducting accuchecks, strep tests, pregnancy tests, influenza tests, urinalysis, electrocardiograms, neonatal non-stress tests, hemoccult, peak flows, nebulizer treatment, urine dips, pulse oximetry, oral and IV medication administration, and immunizations.
3. Conduct patient triage; obtain vitals, order labs/radiology, and establish a patient flow.
4. Assist with room setup based on the type of examination.
5. Provide patient education based on the treatment plan.
6. Coordinate diagnostic lab and radiology tests.
7. Handle or guide patient calls to the appropriate medical advice.
8. Responsible for the safety of patients and colleagues in all patient care areas.
9. Make sound judgments regarding medical emergencies.
10. Conduct patient handoff to EMS/hospitals for medical emergencies.
11. Administer and document medications and immunizations by intramuscular, subcutaneous, intradermal, and mouth.

ADMINISTRATION 10%
1. Assist with nurse schedule.
2. Assist with the annual competency of certified medical assistant staff.
3. Assist with training and onboarding new licensed professional nurse staff.
4. Assist with the daily duties and responsibilities of clinic/patient care areas.

Qualifications

1. Graduation from an accredited program for Licensed Practical Nurses.
2. Eligibility for licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
