Job Description

Title: Laboratory Service Engineer Level I or Level II

Department: Operations Technical Improvement

Location: Horsham, PA

Schedule: Mon - Fri 2:00pm - 10:30pm with rotating weekend coverage 1/5 weeks

Job Summary:

The Laboratory Service Engineer coordinates and/or performs the installation, inspection, repair, calibration and maintenance for assigned laboratory equipment and instrumentation. The Laboratory Service Engineer responds to requests for non-method related troubleshooting needs, performs scheduled preventative maintenance and facilitates maintenance best practices through staff education. This position is responsible for contributing to the tracking of instrument down time and cost of operation.

Requirements:

Level I

* High school diploma

* minimum of 4 years of lab experience

* Associate degree in science or electronic engineering technology or similar major and minimum 2 years of experience; or a BS/BA science or Biomedical Engineering and minimum 1 year of experience.

* Documented training in the operation and maintenance of at least 1 type of laboratory equipment such as GC, HPLC, GC/MS, LC-MS/MS, ICP/MS, ICP-OES, AA, auto-analyzers, liquid handling devices, and related laboratory equipment.

Level II

* High school diploma with minimum of 7 years of lab experience; or an Associate's degree in science or Biomedical Engineering and minimum of 4 years of experience; or a BS/BA and minimum 3 years of experience.

* Documented training in the operation and maintenance of at least 4 types of laboratory equipment such as GC, HPLC, GC/MS, LC-MS/MS, ICP/MS, ICP-OES, AA, auto-analyzers, liquid handling devices, and related laboratory equipment.

* Demonstrated expertise in repairs of 2 types of these instruments.

* Documented training by manufacturers in the repair of lab equipment routinely used at NMS Labs.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Level I

* Conducts work assignments of minimal complexity, independently.

* Creates routine maintenance schedules for all laboratory equipment with assignment of responsibility for each task.

* Verifies that all scheduled routine maintenance is completed properly and sufficiently documented.

* Performs and documents routine maintenance as assigned.

* Develops, updates and tracks an inventory of on-site spare parts to maximize instrument uptime while controlling cost.

* Responsible for ensuring all services and documentation is complete, timely, and accurate.

* Works with laboratory management to maintain a complete and well-organized service history for each piece of lab equipment.

* Troubleshoots low complexity problems with laboratory equipment.

* Diagnoses and performs low complexity repairs.

* Schedule inspections and routine maintenance of lab equipment with lab supervisors.

* Coordinates repair services provided by outside vendors.

* Works with laboratory management to ensure regulatory compliance with instrument maintenance and documentation practices.

Level II

Performs all duties of a Level I proficiently.

Conducts work assignments of increasing complexity, independently.

Participates in lab equipment installations and relocations.

Participates in the completion of Instrument Qualification (IQ) and Instrument Operational Qualification (OQ) documentation.

Participates in scheduled maintenance performed by outside vendors.

Troubleshoots moderate complexity problems with laboratory equipment.

Diagnoses and performs moderate complexity repairs.

Works with outside vendors to maximize instrument up-time and minimizing cost to NMS Labs

Documents overall equipment down-time.

Tracks cost of operation for lab equipment.

Trains lab staff on performance of low complexity routine maintenance of lab equipment.

Provides off-hours phone support to NMS Labs' personnel to assist in troubleshooting and repairs of lab equipment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

* Working knowledge and experience in operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments such as GC, HPLC, GC/MS, LC-MS/MS, ICP-MS, and related laboratory equipment

* Familiarity with the computer software used to operate lab instrumentation to allow for troubleshooting.

* Working knowledge of computer networking

* Highly skilled in working with tools.

* Operational knowledge of electronics and electronic monitoring devices including programmable logic control devices

* Excellent interpersonal skills and strong attention to details

* Strong written and verbal communication skills

* Able to comprehend regulations and SOPs and apply them to work operations.

* Able to manage multiple projects, train end users, and help them troubleshoot/resolve instrumental issues.

* Able to effectively communicate findings and recommendations in verbal and written form to employees, management, executives, co-workers and clients and respond to questions.

* Able to define/resolve problems, collect data, establish facts/draw valid conclusions, and identify/correct errors.

Physical Demands:

* While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands and fingers to manipulate objects, tools and controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.

* Moving from one work location to another to sit and stand, sometimes for extended periods of time.

* Specific vision abilities required by this job (with correction) include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

* Occasionally required to bend, crouch, kneel, climb, balance, or otherwise maneuver body while servicing and/or inspecting laboratory equipment.

* Frequently required to lift, carry, or otherwise move up to 20 pounds while working with laboratory equipment.

* Valid driver's license required, variable travel requirements to multiple sites.
