Description

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) invites applications for multiple tenure-track faculty positions. We are strongly committed to all members of our community: students, faculty, and staff. Our mission is to inspire and educate the next generation of engineers and to conduct engineering science and technology research that addresses important societal challenges. We strive to accomplish this mission with the highest dedication to quality, integrity, and respect for others. We are particularly interested in applicants who are committed to and have a passion for a culturally-diverse environment in research and teaching and who demonstrate an eagerness to strengthen the culture of inclusivity at CMU. We are actively and purposefully committed to considering a diverse applicant pool in terms of gender, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, and disability. CMU seeks to meet the needs of dual-career couples and is a member of the Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC), which assists with dual-career searches.

We have multiple tenure-track positions open to candidates from a broad range of engineering backgrounds. Consistent with the current breadth of departmental research, we welcome applicants with expertise across a wide variety of research areas broadly related to mechanical engineering. Applicants will also contribute synergistically to existing research activities in the department, college, and university-at-large, all of which have a highly-collaborative environment with a rich history of interdisciplinary research. We are especially interested in applicants working on the integration and development of artificial intelligence and machine learning approaches with a broad range of engineering domains.

The Mechanical Engineering department consists of approximately 40 faculty, 450 undergraduate students, and 450 graduate students. We have a dynamic, growing, and diverse faculty who create a cultivating and energetic environment with innovative research in both traditional and non-traditional domains that address societal challenges. A new world-class building with state-of-the-art research and educational facilities opened as the home for Mechanical Engineering in the summer of 2023. The department provides an ideal environment for researchers from diverse technical backgrounds to develop an academic career.

Expectations: You are expected to contribute to teaching our core undergraduate, elective, and graduate courses. Tenure-track faculty at CMU carry a moderate teaching load, typically two courses per year, which allows time for quality research and close involvement with students. You are expected to establish and grow a strong externally-supported and internationally-recognized research program, contribute to our teaching mission, be a passionate mentor and advisor, and serve with colleagues to help promote the general success of the department.

Eligibility: We seek individuals who hold a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline and have demonstrated dedication to our core values: scientific truth, creativity, quality, innovation, and engineering solutions. Faculty appointments are typically made at the rank of Assistant Professor. Appointments may also be made at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor depending on your qualifications.

Instructions to Apply: Your application should include:

  • A cover letter.
  • Your curriculum vitae.
  • A research statement of no more than five pages, outlining a compelling vision for a research program that ultimately goes beyond your prior experience as a PhD student, post-doctoral fellow, and/or in industry. Your statement should include initial research projects that can be immediately pursued with graduate students and for which external funding can realistically be sought. Your statement should also include a longer-term vision with more far-reaching plans, which may reference potential collaborators in the department and elsewhere at CMU.

* A teaching statement of no more than two pages, outlining both your experience and philosophy and a list of CMU Mechanical Engineering and courses that you are interested in teaching.

* A diversity statement of no more than two pages, outlining how you have contributed to and plan to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

You should also request 4-5 professional references via the Interfolio system.

Please visit: http://apply.interfolio.com/130632 to submit an application.

Applications should be submitted as a single PDF document, except for the letters of recommendation, which should be requested individually through the confidential letter request function in Interfolio. You may wish to send an email to each of your letter writers to alert them that they will receive an automated email from Interfolio requesting that they upload their letter of recommendation. The automated Interfolio emails are sometimes mistaken for spam.

Review of applications will begin immediately. Applications received by November 1, 2023, will be given full consideration. We encourage you to submit early. Paper applications will not be accepted. Women and members of traditionally underrepresented minority groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

Carnegie Mellon University considers applicants for employment without regard to, and does not discriminate on the basis of, gender, race, protected veteran status, disability, or any other legally protected status.
