Overview

The Veterinary Technician works closely with veterinary personnel in supporting the treatment and care of nonhuman primates in Alice, TX. Monitors animal health and welfare by working in collaboration with veterinarians, veterinary technicians, behavioral personnel and animal care technicians. Performs daily walkthroughs of animal rooms/enclosures and serves as a point of contact for animal technicians to report concerns. Documents and prioritizes cases of concern and communicates with department veterinarian for further directives. Performs technical medical procedures in the various departments and assists the veterinary team in all aspects of animal care.

Responsibilities
    Socializing animals (group or pair housing) according to animal welfare requirements and assists with behavioural assessments.
  • Observing animals for signs and or symptoms of illness or abnormal behaviour.
  • Handling and restraining animals using positive reinforcement techniques for routine animal handling tasks.
  • Leading training initiatives e.g. animal observations, technical procedures, etc.
  • Providing mentorship, training and guidance for less experienced staff.
  • Participating in internal and external audits.
  • Performing assessments and physical examinations.
  • Performing non-invasive surgeries with veterinary support.
  • Administering therapeutic modalities such as medications, fluid therapy, safe application of external heat source, etc.
  • Assisting with dental procedures, such as routine cleaning and/or extractions.
  • Monitoring anesthesia and recovery.
  • Obtaining and submitting diagnostic samples to the laboratory.
  • Serving as health representative in other departments, e.g. behavior, hospital, shipping, quarantine and outdoor housing.
  • Participating in and providing feedback for special projects when required by management.
  • Ensuring accurate and concise communication between veterinary staff and technicians.
  • Effectively applying knowledge of regulatory requirements, guidelines and SOPs.
  • Demonstrating effective quality control and documentation skills.
  • Obtaining diagnostic radiographs/ultrasounds and maintaining equipment in working order.
  • Ensuring proper documentation of controlled substances.
  • Fulfill any other assigned duties that may be required by Envigo.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor or Associates degree in Life Sciences, Associate degree in Laboratory Animal Technology, Associate degree in Veterinary Technology, Registered Vet Tech or Certified Vet Tech with a minimum of six months experience. Experience may be substituted for education requirements.
  • AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist level desirable.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Six months of experience in a laboratory or veterinary setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of anatomic and physiologic variations in lab animals, animal husbandry, behavior, feeding, nutrition, diseases, and reproduction.
  • Ability to effectively interact with staff and clients.
  • Skilled in concise writing and intermediate level computer operations.
  • Ability to accurately read, record, and communicate information.
  • Must have good interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must be able to multi-task and prioritize conflicting deadlines.

Working Conditions:

  • Overtime and weekend work required.
  • Mandatory immunizations and screening as required.
  • May work with potentially hazardous substances not limited to known/potential teratogens or carcinogens.
  • Work will require PPE (personal protective equipment).
  • Must be able to work:
  • In laboratory setting with NHP
  • In small or confined spaces
  • In inclement and extreme temperatures

*This position could be offered at different levels for candidates who qualify with a combination of advanced levels of education and/or years of experience. The salary range will adjust along with the level of the role to match the person's relevant experience and/or education level.
