This is professional scientific and administrative work assisting the Laboratory Director in the management of the State Public Health Laboratory and in the advancement of the scientific activities of the Bureau of Labs.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position works in tandem with the Laboratory Director in the management and operations of the Public Health Laboratory.

Responsibilities include assisting in the planning, directing, coordinating, and supervising of scientific work of the divisions of microbiology, chemistry and toxicology, virology and immunology, and laboratory improvement. You develop and implement the strategic vision of the laboratory in conjunction with the director and serve with full authority as director in the director's absence. You also consult and coordinate with other bureaus in the Department of Health, other state agencies, community laboratories, federal agencies, and other states to assist in the development and implementation of the bureau's policies and procedures. In addition, you are required to keep current on scientific advances, including new technology and testing, and applying that knowledge to the laboratory.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 37.5-hour work week
  • Work hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday, with 60-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time up to two (2) days a week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Exton.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • You must meet all Special Requirements.

Special Requirements:
  • You must meet the qualifications under the provisions of the federal Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment (CLIA) for Laboratory Director (*493.1443) within eighteen months of hire.
  • You must meet the Qualifications of Director under 28 Pa. Code *5.21.88 subsection (a) and the Pennsylvania Clinical Laboratory Act at the time of hire
  • You must meet the Qualifications of Director under 28 Pa. Code *5.21.88 subsection (b) within eighteen months of hire.

Other Requirements:
  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
