A Brief Overview

Entry-level research technical position in a translational research laboratory focused on developing therapies for pediatric neurogenetic disorders. The primary focus of the lab is to improve our understanding of how genetic alter brain development that alters the electrical activity of the brain, ultimately leading to the clinical symptoms that the children with neurogenetic conditions have. The lab uses a variety of techniques, both physiological, molecular, behavioral, and genetic, to reach our goal. With these techniques, we aim to address our goal to develop treatments that can improve the function of electrical circuits in the brain to treat symptoms such as seizures and intellectual disability.

We are looking for a person who is bright, intellectually curious, and motivated to both learn new techniques and/or apply any skills they may have already developed to our work.

A willingness to perform studies on animal models of disease (mouse models) is required.



What you will do

  • Performs routine tests / experiments under the direction of principal investigator, supervisor or other designee
  • Performs research procedures on experimental samples as directed
  • Records and checks experiments/ results for completeness and accuracy
  • Performs calculations and maintains appropriate log and lab notebooks
  • Performs tasks that require familiarity with fundamental techniques and lab equipment
  • May assist with planning specific research protocols and procedures
  • Maintains office, lab area, solutions, reagents, supplies and equipment, disposes of specimens, media and other materials (using appropriate procedures)
  • Assists in care and maintenance of lab equipment
  • May coordinate schedules of tests and procedures
  • Attends courses, seminars, and lab meetings to expand knowledge of research and laboratory techniques
  • Records results, organizes data and maintains lab notebook in an organized manner
  • Compiles and helps analyze data, prepares charts, graphs, and results of studies as directed
  • Conducts literary searches as directed
  • Performs experiments utilizing mouse models of disease, initially directly under the supervision of others but overtime independently. Techniques will include histology, cell culture, animal surgeries, and basic electrophysiology.
  • Maintains mouse colony
  • Records results, performs basic data analysis, and maintains lab notebook in an organized manner.
  • Helps to prepare presentations and written articles for publication.
  • Prepares laboratory reagents, chemicals, instruments, and maintains equipment.
  • Maintains operations and supplies inventory in accordance with departmental procedures.

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED Required
  • Associate's Degree Preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • At least one (1) year of related classroom experience or successful completion of a technical training program (eg. Wistar, WPSI) and research laboratory experience Required
  • At least two (2) years of related classroom experience or successful completion of a technical training program (eg. Wistar, WPSI) and research laboratory experience Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Intermediate understanding of lab procedures, protocols, and equipment.
  • Basic exposure to lab specific experiments / techniques and scientific analysis
