Substitute School Counselor


Job Description:

The school counselor's primary role is to help any student in need of academic, social, and emotional assistance, and to provide activities and services that will enhance the quality of the students' school experience. Counselors work cooperatively with administrators, teachers, parents, other support personnel, and the community to develop a quality program that best meets the individual student's needs.


Qualifications:

  • Education: A Master's degree in guidance counseling, representing intensive course work in the principles and practice of educational guidance; educational testing and measurement; counseling; the organization and administration of guidance services; and the psychology of learning.
  • Certificates & Licenses: Valid Pennsylvania Department of Education license with an endorsement in School Counseling, or eligibility to obtain one.
  • Experience: Job-related within the specialized field with increasing levels of responsibility is required.


Essential Functions:


  • Develops and provides an effective comprehensive school counseling program to serve the needs of all students in the areas of academic, personal, social, and career development, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of national, state, and local school counseling standards.
  • Provides students and families with immediate and long-range educational planning and course selection, as appropriate.
  • Works with students on their career plans.
  • Collects, analyzes, and uses data to develop, implement, and evaluate the school counseling program.
  • Prepares reports, records, lists, and all other required information and data.
  • Provides consultation and in-service to give teachers and administrators in the school information, strategies, and approaches for maximizing the total development of students.
  • Encourages teacher/parent communication and community involvement.
  • Assists students in conflict resolution and manages crises.
  • Assists in the identification of students with special needs and serves as a case manager for students with a 504 plan.
  • Refers students to intervention or remediation programs, as well as, academic and alternative programs to ensure academic success and personal well-being.
  • Explains and interprets to students, parents, and the community division-wide policies, goals, and objectives that impact students' academic achievement and the school counseling program.
  • Informs students about standardized testing.
  • Uses tests and other means of student assessment to promote student self-knowledge.
  • Assumes responsibility for continued personal and professional growth in counseling, as well as the improvement of the profession.
  • Provides for program evaluation for the purpose of accountability and continued program refinement.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Maintains and models high standards of professionalism.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned by the school principal or other appropriate administrator.
