Overview (Scope of Role)

The Analytical Engineer (Polymers / Plastics) will manage lab equipment and it's maintenance, translate methods from existing processes to new lab equipment, and perform testing/analysis (TGA, DSC, etc) per business priorities. This role is within our Technology and Innovation function.

Responsibilities
    Support analytical lab activities for North American T&I, R&D, TS&D teams.
  • Independently runs routine and non-routine lab testings. Generates high-quality data results and documentations on a regular basis. During testing, takes initiative to modify any weak aspects of the testing to generate clearer higher-quality results.
  • Makes recommendations to engineer for corrections/modification to testing methods, including equipment usage or any other recommendation of the testing that would affect the usefulness of the results.
  • Ensures availability, calibration and maintenance of equipment and independently troubleshoots medium to complex problems, including those escalated by junior colleagues
  • Acts as SME (subject matter expert) on defined analytical techniques and/or equipment. Is a dedicated "go-to" person for manufacturing personnel and/or engineers. May lead the lab testing process for an assigned development project.
  • Owns the planning, scheduling and operation of the more-complex equipment, as well as the equipment modification and improvement and run the MOC process.
  • Participates in the development of equipment capital projects and in the implementation of newly acquired or modified equipment.
  • Records generated testing data in data management system. Documents test results and observations in reports used by others. Participates in the development of test SOPs in local language. May produce technical reports or presentations for non-technical people.
  • Coordinates daily lab activities by setting priorities and assigning responsibilities. Is the primary "go-to" person for others within the lab. Initiates or conducts proper training for other colleagues on various equipment, procedures, and the data management systems.
  • Work closely with Asian & European & North American team to solve customer issues to improve satisfaction.
  • Provide technical guidance to production to ensure high product quality, and document management.
  • Support new technology customization and commercialization together with commercial team.
  • Support new business development from technical regards together with commercial team.
  • May generate data and produce technical reports or presentations used for customers
  • Acts as role model for Safety SOP requirements in daily operation. Identifies and escalates safety gaps in the lab (related to the processes or in the facility).Complies within the EHS regulations.
  • Keep lab operations well-organized and tidy
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field or equivalent
  • 5+ years of lab experience utilizing similar equipment, testing and analytical processes (TGA, DSC, GC, HPLC, FTIR, GPC, etc)
  • Polymer/Plastics processing experience
  • Experienced and proficient with statistical design software to be able to develop, design, and interpret experimental test data and make recommendations
  • Has a broad understanding of a wide range of equipment, with deeper knowledge on equipment in the area of specialization.
  • Ability to adjust/tweak testing methods to clarify/improve testing results during fairly regular and sometime non-routine testing procedures.
  • Makes routine decisions on such things as ordering supplies or external maintenance of standard equipment within the allotted budget. -Recommendations made during the testing process are often acted on with little or no questioning by the engineer or leader.
  • High sense of responsibility and safety consciousness.
  • Strong operational ability.
  • Strong communication skill in English.
  • Ability to develop relationships with vendors of equipment will be important for success in this role.
