Position Purpose: 

As Manager of Decarbonization, the incumbent will develop, manage, and coordinate the execution of the Utilities decarbonization roadmap to achieve Veolia NA’s Municipal Waters goal to reduce in CO2 of 35% by 2035 and net zero by 2050 to mitigate the effects of climate change.  Collaborates with the local business units to set and achieve annual CO2 reduction goals through reduction energy consumption, implementation renewable energy, and other decarbonization solutions.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and implementation of a long-term decarbonization plan for the Utility and its operating regions to support a reduction in CO2 of 35% by 2035 and net zero by 2050 to mitigate the effects of climate change.
  • Develop on-the-ground projects and programs that advance Veolia NA’s three-pronged climate strategy of reducing and avoiding emission of greenhouse gasses, offsetting emissions that are unavoidable and capturing carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere.
  • Advise Utility leadership on defining decarbonization and implementing measuring and monitoring best practices.
  • Develop relationships with local/regional power utilities and stakeholders to take advantage of rebate, tax credit, and related energy efficiency programs  in ways that are beneficial to Veolia NA.
  • Work closely with the Municipal Water and Utility Technical and Performance teams to track, report and dashboard the MW BU’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions footprint in an annual GHG inventory publication.
  • Lead the annual ESG reporting and the development of action items to reduce CO2 emissions. 
  • Collaborate with the developers of Veolia’s GreenPath tool and range of 100 solutions to support and guide Utility teams with their low-carbon and climate change adaptation plans and reduce their carbon footprint across their entire value chain.
  • Support local and regional teams in their submission of nominations for industry awards to promote local, national and international recognition of Veolia NA’s positive impact on the environment and the climate.
  • Provides leadership, guidance, and support on energy efficiency and sustainability programs and implementation of energy efficiency practices for operations.  Including, but not limited to pump efficiency.

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in environmental science, environmental engineering, chemistry, or a related field.
  • Experience with decarbonization within a utility or industrial environment (e.g. rotating equipment optimization, green energy production, fleet electrification, buildings, etc.) a plus.
  • Master’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • 5 to 7 years of related experience.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Exceptional/comprehensive understanding of greenhouse gas emissions accounting methodologies and credits.
  • Experience with pump efficiency.
  • Excellent and proven managerial, supervisory, mentoring and team collaboration skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including comfort delivering presentations to senior leadership.
  • Excellent organization, facilitation, and project and program management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage large, complex projects, deadlines and tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work interchangeably as part of a team and/or autonomously.
  • Ability to understand customers’ perspective, key business drivers and critical success factors in the water industry.
  • Comfort with ambiguity, frequent change, or unpredictability.
  • Proficient in Google Platform and other computerized systems.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

  • City Climate Planner - GHG Inventory Specialist a plus.
  • Lead and/or Envision certification a plus.
