Job Summary:
The Associate Vice President for Student Success & Advocacy & Dean of Students (AVP/DOS) is a pivotal leadership role within the Division of Student Affairs, responsible for overseeing various departments focused on enhancing the student experience and promoting a supportive campus environment. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Student Affairs, this position provides vision and leadership in developing, implementing, assessing, and evolving a broad range of programs that support student wellbeing, engagement, retention, and success.

The AVP/DOS will enter the Division at a time where new standards in educational support, including intrusive and high-impact strategies designed to enhance the complete student life cycle experience are needed and in high demand. The AVP/DOS must possess the skillset, ability, and desire to immerse themselves in the daily lives of students.

The AVP/DOS serves as the chief student advocate, educating the campus community on various trends related to student rights and responsibilities, contributing to the development and dissemination of polices on student behavior and civility, and working adeptly in an environment of student social justice activism.

The AVP/DOS provides leadership, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for staff, fosters a culture of continuous learning and growth, participates in campus emergency response and crisis management efforts for a community of 40,000 undergraduate and graduate students, and represents the Division of Student Affairs to various institutional colleagues, committees, students, and their parents, and/or the public. This role is responsible for the following key initiatives, policy development and compliance, student advocacy, support and representation, collaboration and outreach, budget management, data analysis and assessment, professional development and training, crisis management and response.

The AVP/DOS's portfolio consists of major organizational units that support students experiencing challenges, manages and enforcement student conduct policies and implementation and coordination of interventions and resources in regard to student success. This position provides direct supervision of five full-time staff members; the Associate Dean of Students, Sr. Associate Dean of Students, Director of Student Conduct & Community Standards, Director of Disability Resources & Services, and an Administrative Coordinator and provides leadership for four (4) departments within the Division of Student Affairs. This position will also coordinate the preparation of grant proposals to enhance student services and student success in partnership with Institutional Advancement.

Required Education and Experience:
* A master's degree in higher education administration, student personnel, or a closely related field.
* At least ten (10) years of progressively responsible senior-level experience in higher education, specifically in student affairs.
* Evidence of success working with a diverse college student population, demonstrated knowledge of student development theory, research, and best practices.
* An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills and Abilities:
* Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, and leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with students, faculty, staff, and senior administration. Networking skills are essential.
* Recent training in leadership competencies in student affairs, especially dispute resolution, social justice and inclusion, law and policy, student conduct, and judicial affairs.
* Demonstrated ability in budget and resource allocation and strategic planning and a clear understanding of the academic process and its relationship to student issues.
* Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously and to formulate and execute effective action plans.
* Ability to work well in an intense, fast-paced environment.
* Able to recognize and/or recruit talented staff.
* Expertise in diffusing and resolving conflict while remaining empathetic to all parties involved.
* Must have strong mediation skills.
* Demonstrated cultural awareness.

Preferred Education, Experience, Skills and Abilities:
* At least five years of supervisory leadership
* A strong commitment to urban higher education in a multicultural, multiracial environment.
* Experience with strategic planning and grants management.
* Experience within a large multi-campus system.
