Systems Planning Corporation (SPC), a subsidiary company of GAI Consultants, Inc., is seeking individuals to fill seasonal positions as Environmental Technicians serving as Bat Research Field Assistants. The work location will be various states in the Eastern United States. This position is in anticipation of more growth and is an evergreen position. This project will primarily take place between Mid-May to Mid-August.

Job Duties:

  • Assisting qualified bat biologists in conducting presence/absence surveys for bats (which could include the performance of habitat assessments, acoustic sampling, mist-netting, radio-telemetry, portal searches, and portal trapping as necessary).
  • Assisting with surveys for other rare species or other environmental work as needed.
  • Conducting rare, threatened, and endangered bat surveys on development projects throughout the Northeast, Midwest, and the Southeast United States.
  • Performing field site reconnaissance, habitat assessments, acoustic sampling, acoustic analyses, mist-netting, portal searches, portal trapping, and/or radio telemetry.
  • Coordinating with team leaders, field supervisors, land agents, and/or landowners as required.
  • Assisting with bat equipment preparations, White-nose Syndrome decontamination procedures, data entry and/or report writing or other environmental surveys as needed.
  • Overnight travel within 500 miles for weekly to 10-day shifts is required. Fieldwork in rough terrain, exposed to weather and outdoor hazards. Traveling to remote areas and driving on rough roads in a variety of weather conditions can be expected.

  • Fieldwork will be conducted during the day and at night in variable weather and environmental conditions, often requiring long or irregular hours.
  • Lift and/or move up to 40lbs.
  • Hiking long distances while carrying up to 25lbs of gear in steep, uneven terrain or wadable water.
  • A commitment to safely performing job duties in these conditions is required.

Qualifications

Education
Bachelors of Biology (required)

Experience
0 - 2 years: Experience related to the Biological field. (required)
Knowledge and ability to identify trees of the Eastern U.S. (required)
Rabies pre-exposure vaccinations. (preferred)
Experience with mist-netting for bats or birds. (preferred)
