The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a driven and organized Director of Finance and Operations. In this role, you will have the opportunity to oversee the financial operations of a medium sized academic department. This role will serve as a resource to the faculty and staff of matters of policy and administration, develop budgets and financial reporting, and administer policies and procedures for department operations. This role serves as the right hand of the Department Head and will influence all facets of department business.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Serving as key member of department leadership team, supporting the overall mission of Chemical Engineering.

  • Collaborating and partnering with the College of Engineering's Business Office on financial, operational and human resource matters.

  • Serving as department initiator in Workday system for hiring and other personnel functions.

  • Overseeing and coordinating visa process for faculty, staff, and visitor positions.

  • Ensuring compliance with University, College of Engineering, and departmental policies, and guidelines

  • Overseeing department operations including human resources and financial strategy.

  • Analyzing and presenting financial reports to the department head, College of Engineering (CoE), and others.

  • Administering and advising on financial resource matters, policies, and procedures. Advise management on compliance and supporting policies and guidelines.

  • Overseeing and leading the budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the department head.

  • Directly and indirectly supervising all accounting transactions to include purchase orders, P-Card transactions, reimbursements, transfers, journal entries, labor scheduling, recharge center billing, deposits, award processing, donor gift processing, and Workday transactions.

  • Overseeing the sponsored research operations including preparation of proposals and administration of awards. Coordinate with the Engineering Research Accelerator for post-award support. Ensure compliance with government regulations, agency requirements and internal policies and procedures.

  • Proactively working to improve business operations within the department and engage department, CoE and University stakeholders to identify issues, solutions, and support for continuous improvement.

  • Attending regular CoE Department Administrator (DA) meetings, faculty meetings, lead staff meetings, Office of Human Resource meetings, and other meetings pertinent to the role.

  • Managing all staff reporting to the position to effectively recruit, train, evaluate, motivate, delegate, and monitor their activities.

  • Other duties as assigned.

You should demonstrate:

  • Ability to pay close attention to detail; keep and maintain accurate and detailed reports and records.

  • Ability to contribute to important strategy, operation and business decisions that have implications on management and operations for the department.

  • Ability to work normal business hours; evening and weekend work may occasionally be required.

  • Accountability for appropriate oversight and usage of third party and/or University funds.

  • Accountability for operational results and for planning, monitoring and managing budget in the department.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration or related field (master's degree preferred)

  • 5-8 years of experience

  • Financial, accounting, business administration, analytical skills, project management, oral and written communications skills.

    • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Additional Information:

  • This position is operating on a hybrid schedule, with an on-campus/in office presence 4 days a week.

  • Typical work schedule is Monday-Friday during normal business hours. An alternate work schedule allowing for evening and weekend hours will be required on occasion.
