DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Social Services Aide 2, you will be working closely with caseworkers and other social service aides to provide services in the home to families with children after a caseworker has visited and determined services to be provided. This is an excellent opportunity for one-on-one assistance and communication with families to work toward positive goals and outcomes. Duties may include assistance in all areas of family life including household budgeting, in-home parenting education, proper hygiene, nutrition, cooking/food shopping skills, and maintenance of the home. Work may include transporting consumers to supervised visitation and necessary appointments and providing childcare when necessary. Additional responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting families with completing applications or forms
  • Writing reports after each appointment
  • Participating in meetings with other staff to develop treatment plans and set goals for consumers
  • Attending court and testifying
  • Performing clerical office duties as needed

This position may include frequent standing, climbing steps, and walking distances as a normal part of the job duties. Our ideal candidate will have the ability to climb flights of steps in homes or apartment buildings where no elevators are present, manage multiple tasks, meet strict deadlines, and pay close attention to details under a constantly changing work environment. It is important to note that you may be required to travel to areas that may not be accessible to public transportation.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • This position may not have traditional hours of 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM with a one-hour lunch.
  • Evening and weekend work hours are routine.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year as a County Social Services Aide 1; or
  • Graduation from high school, or its equivalency, and two years of experience in public contact work in a human services agency which included one year of experience in interviewing and obtaining information; or
  • An associate's degree in sociology, social welfare, psychology, gerontology, criminal justice, or other related social sciences; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

  • Hiring preference for this vacancy may be given to candidates who live within Lackawanna, Monroe, Pike, Susquehanna, or Wayne counties. If no eligible candidates who live within these counties apply for this position, candidates who reside in other counties may be considered.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • You must pass a background investigation.
  • A conditional offer of employment will require a drug screening.
  • This position falls under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.
    • Under the Law, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports including, but not limited to, PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
