Northampton County's Public Works Department, Bridges Division is hiring seasonal Summer Bridge Crew members to perform maintenance and repair work to bridges. These positions work in masonry, brush cutting, painting, and other light duty construction methods.

Summer positions will work from mid-May until the end of August. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 am until 3:00 pm, and is weather dependent.

Job Description

GENERAL PURPOSE
Under supervision, performs maintenance and repair work to bridges. A position in this class works in light masonry, brush cutting, curb painting, and other light duty construction methods. Work includes the operation of small engine power equipment, and may include work at higher or lower level on an incidental basis.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position reports directly to the Bridge Superintendent and/or Public Works Director. May be indirectly supervised by full-time Bridge Division employees.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
This position is not responsible for the supervision of other employees or functions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF THE POSITION
Follows standard safety practices, including safeguarding bridge users; finishes job to insure proper operation and conformance to accepted standards or refers to higher level personnel.

Operates specialized and general equipment such as mowers, lights, backpack blowers, weedwackers, painting materials, and small mechanical tools; makes repairs to structural components such as pavement and bridges; services or repairs masonry walls, bridge decks , sidewalks and other related bridge elements; may tour assigned area to identify needed repairs and/or check general status of facilities.

Operates air compressors and jack hammers, and similar small maintenance or small construction equipment; provides preventive maintenance of such equipment.

Assists other trades personnel and performs such work on an as needed basis.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE - Any equivalent combination of acceptable training and experience which has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities cited below.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Basic knowledge of principles, practices, methods and techniques commonly employed in mechanical and structural maintenance and repair work.

Some basic knowledge of painting and construction equipment.

Ability to lift, carry and maneuver into position a variety of tools and materials at various weights.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and contracted service personnel.

Ability to work in close proximity with vehicular traffic and the general public.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English to perform the duties of this position.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT
Mechanical testing of power and hand tools, and equipment for mechanical system work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance. Maintenance of masonry tools and equipment, and maintenance and cleaning of painting equipment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, walk sit and talk or hear.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts or in adverse weather conditions. The employee may encounter wet and/or humid conditions. May work in waterways. The employee may deal with high volume of vehicular traffic. The County will provide proper safety equipment and safety training.

The noise level in the work environment is moderately noisy.
