Position Summary

The Peer Specialist helps to engage Young Adults in their own recovery by sharing his/her own mental health history as well as any past involvement with child welfare or the justice system. By sharing his/her own recovery story, the Peer Specialist provides modeling of recovery, helps to engage the Young Adult in treatment services, and also helps to advocate from a recovery-oriented standpoint.

Essential Responsibilities

    1. Assist youth in articulating personal goals for recovery.
    2. Assist youth in determining their treatment goals/objectives.
    3. Teach and support acquisition and utilization of skills needed to facilitate individual recovery.
    4. Promote the knowledge of available service options and choices.
    5. Observe the progress youth make toward meeting objectives.
    6. Serve as a mentor/role model demonstrating competency in recovery, effective coping skills and self-help strategies.
    7. Develop and conduct Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP) individual and group education.
    8. Assist with teaching independent living skills such as accessing public transportation options, cooking, cleaning, etc. May instruct youth in group settings, individually or in their homes as appropriate
    9. Accompany and support youth enrolled in social/leisure, educational, occupational, and/or advocacy- based community integration activities.
    10. Document activities in electronic health record.

Qualifications

  • Clearances. State Police; FBI clearance; child abuse clearance; CPSL Mandated Reporter-Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse training; any additional background checks/clearances required by state governing bodies.
  • Valid driver's license and current vehicle insurance.

Working Conditions

  • Physical Demands. Requires vision, speech, and hearing. Position allows employee to move about freely or sit at will when performing job duties.
  • Environmental Factors. Office, home, community
  • Working Hours. Non-traditional hours as determined by the program, including some evening hours and occasional weekends.

Education
High School (required)

Experience
Peer Support Certification (required)
Within the last 3 years has maintained at least 12 months of successful full or part time paid or voluntary work experience OR obtained at least 24 credit hours of post-secondary education. (required)
Young adult who is or has a lived experience as a recipient of mental health services and is willing to disclose his/her peer status to team members and consumers. (required)
