Description

Conemaugh Nason Medical Center is seeking a PRN Phlebotomist for our on-site hospital laboratory. This position plays an intricate role in our patient's healthcare experience, it is necessary to have exceptional customer service skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. This position is responsible to collect and obtain specimens for both outpatients and inpatients, then submits them to facility laboratory for processing. The phlebotomist may also be expected to travel to local long-term care facilities and physician offices to complete blood draws, specimen pick-ups, and drop off needed supplies. This position is expected to maintain an organized and clean work area, and to ensure there are adequate amount of supplies. Phlebotomist must have strong computer skills and be able to accurately enter laboratory orders.

Qualifications

Essential Functions:

Able to perform phlebotomy and blood gases for all age groups, including neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.

Able to perform EKG's and recognize and alert respiratory therapy of abnormal or unusual tracings.

Able to perform Occupation Health Urine drug tests and Breathalyzer testing, including correct completion of Chain of Custody and Alcohol forms per company policy.

Accurate collection of samples.

Correctly orders/registers patients in laboratory and hospital system.

Correctly identifies patient using 2 indicators prior to collecting specimen.

Meets collection time standards.

Meets Blood Culture contamination rate.

Proper pick-up and storage of specimens.

Collection of swabs for flu and viral testing.

Safely drives hospital vehicle and notifies maintenance of any vehicle problems.

Provides excellent customer service to physician office and long- term care home staff, patients, hospital staff, physicians, and visitors.

Demonstrates self-motivational skills and exhibits self-direction.

Adheres to department policy in regard to customer satisfaction.

Demonstrates accountability and professionalism.

Completes mandatory annual in-service and annual competencies within mandated timeframes.

Assumes responsibility for maintaining technical skills and professional expertise, i.e., phlebotomist certification, BLS, etc.

Job Requirements:

Education/Licenses

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Completion of phlebotomy training.

Certification as phlebotomist preferred.

Required Skills

Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgement, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

Good computer skills.

Excellent customer service skills.

Detail oriented.

Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
