Vice President, Transplant Service Line amp; Director, Transplant Institute

Jefferson Health

Thomas Jefferson University seeks a visionary and collaborative academic physician leader to serve as theClinical Leader of the Transplant Enterprise Service Line at Jefferson Health, a footprint that includes two multi organ transplant programs performing nearly 300 transplants annually in Philadelphia, PA.

The ideal candidate will be a transplant surgeon and will report to the Chair of Surgery and the Chief Physician Executive at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Working in lockstep with an executive-level administrative dyad partner, the Clinical Leader of the Transplant Service Line will serve as the strategic lead in determining how Transplant care is delivered across the enterprise and will be critical in driving transformational change and growth of Transplant services at Jefferson Health. The Clinical Leader will be responsible for driving transformational change through clinical innovation--guiding strategy, overseeing implementation, and monitoring performancemdash;and will be accountable for improving quality of care and enhancing systems and processes for care delivery, ensuring for consistent quality across all sites of care, while optimizing efficiency in the delivery and accessibility of transplantation services for the communities of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey.

The Clinical amp; Administrative Dyad Partnership

In an effort to optimize service delivery, further streamline processes, ensure for consistent quality, bring greater efficiencies, and drive growth and financial profitability across the enterprise, Jefferson Health recently introduced a new service line structure, comprised of 6 enterprise service lines, each co-led by an Administrative Leader and a Clinical Leader dyad: Oncology, Neuroscience, Heart amp; Vascular, MSK, Solid Organ Transplant, and OBGYN.

While changes to the operational structure will help advance Jeffersonrsquo;s mission of becoming a fully integrated academic health system, lsquo;One Jefferson#39; will require leaders who understand the competitive advantages that come with integration and who can build the kinds of interdependent academic-clinical connections inherent to value-based patient-centered care, destination educational programs, and paradigm shifting clinical research offerings.

Successful integrated and shared leadership roles will be critical in working cohesively and collaboratively across a matrixed organization to driving accountability and progress tostrengthen and expand clinical and education programs in concert with clinical partners across the enterprise.

With the assistance of newly established Health System Councils, cross-disciplinary collaborative forums created to refine the operational approach taken, the Transplant Clinical and Administrative leadership dyad will share responsibility for driving the following transformational and operational areas:

Operational Efficiency, Includingidentifying cost reduction opportunities across the enterprise, as well as redundant service areas to be consolidated.

Clinical Quality, leading efforts to standardized care across the enterprise, thereby improving the patient experience and overall patient outcomes;

Growth amp; Transformationincluding initiatives to elevate Jeffersonrsquo;s reputation, as well as grow market share and patient revenue

  • Including oversight of provider workforce planning and clinical coverage, as well as provider retention through increased engagement and work satisfaction initiatives.

Clinical Leaderrsquo;s Primary Areas of Responsibility amp; Specific Duties

The following goals and objectives have been identified as priorities for the Clinical Leader and are listed below in no particular order:

  • Work with clinical leadership to develop a compelling vision and strategic business plan to advance and support the service linersquo;s continued evolution across the Jefferson enterprise.
  • Redesign care delivery model with new workflows focused on efficiencies of value-based care engagement that lend to increased patient satisfaction and throughput, as well as delivery of higher quality care to patients at lower costs.
  • Inprove overall patient outcomes by reducing clinical variations and in creating clinical effectiveness, while maintaining essential patient quality standards. Set expectations for improved clinical outcomes and engage providers around process and steps to achieve those outcomes. Identify areas in need of greater quality and safety measures; establish standardized metrics and necessary performance goals.
  • Hold leadership accountable for meeting quality measures and regulatory standards for their respective markets and clinical teams. Work with Enterprise Leadership to ensure Service Linersquo;s performance meets national, regional, and local publicly-reported quality measures across the enterprise.
  • Optimize service delivery and patient mix, while ensuring consistent quality of care, by achieving enterprise-wide harmonization of standardized care across all sites.
  • Facilitate academic and scientific advancement, by:
    • Playing a pivotal role in expanding education programs in concert with clinical partners across Jefferson Healthrsquo;s regions.
    • Fostering clinical innovation across the enterprise.
    • Growing extramurally-funded clinical research. As applicable, coordinate the clinical trial opportunities for patients across Jefferson Health.
  • Initiate and deepen philanthropic relationships and partnerships with healthcare provider affiliates. Pursue new business opportunities, e.g., joint ventures as appropriate.

Minimum Requirements

  • At least 5 years of leadership experience in clinical operations, ideally gained with a large healthcare system.
  • A career trajectory, with increasing levels of administrative responsibilities that has (ideally) culminated in serving as a surgical director in transplantation.
  • A strong record of teaching and supporting academic programs for medical students, residents, and fellows, as well as experience with cultivating academic-clinical partnerships and training programs.
  • Experiencefacilitating and promoting clinical research, with a working understanding of the supporting infrastructure and nuances of clinical research, e.g. the clinical trial process and phrases
  • Demonstrated commitment to championing excellence in clinical quality, supported by patient satisfaction scores expected of a high-performing clinician at a leading academic center.
  • An MD/DO or equivalent international degree, be Board certified in Surgery, have completed a fellowship training program at an ASTS-certified transplant surgery training program, and be eligible for a Pennsylvania Medical License.
  • Academic accomplishments which merit appointment at the rank of associate or full professor at Sidney Kimmel Medical College.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, and to health equity.
  • Experience with the operational and financial management of administering a department, including prior budget management responsibility, strategic planning, and resource management.
