Position Summary

Reporting to the Nuclear Medicine-PET/CT Supervisor, this position is responsible for performing diagnostic procedures using radioactive materials and electronic imaging equipment in accordance with the policies of Aria Health and the PA State Department of Environmental Protection, and performing tasks related to department operations. Performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor. This position is required to rotate through all campuses of Aria Health Hospital Nuclear Medicine and take on call.

Job Specific Criteria
  • Prepares diagnostic imaging examinations, in vivo organ monitoring examinations, and in vitro examinations using scintillation camera, scintillation detection scaler, rectilinear scanner and clinical data system (computer), and perform weekly calibration checks of scintillation cameras for quality control.
  • Performs and quantifies dynamic tests such as radionuclide angiocardiography and coronary artery imaging studies, and in this connection perform quantitative in vivo studies involving precise positioning of the patient and the plotting time versus activity histograms of a particular region or organ of interest.
  • Prepares and administers radioactive agents by adhering to established procedures for preparation of kits and IV injection of agents to ensure accurate diagnostic testing/imaging.
  • Assess the appropriateness of requested exams by using pre-established guidelines to ensure that the exam is performed accurately the first time.
  • Operates nuclear detection, imaging, and computer processing equipment for nuclear radiologic studies by following professional, hospital, and departmental protocols to provide the physician with diagnostic images to identify and/or plan appropriate treatment for the patientrsquo;s condition.
  • Independently selects areas of interest within an organ from videotape recall displays, collects related data, and computes exponential curves for the physicianrsquo;s diagnosis.
  • Calibrates and checks all applicable equipment at the beginning of the day, as per protocol. Checks radioactive shipments, monitors and records readings in log books. Runs a daily flood source and bar-graph flood weekly. Sets up scanning room/treadmill room for the dayrsquo;s caseload.
  • Maintains equipment by performing scheduled cleaning/tests and documents results. Assists with QA/QC activities.
  • Contacts service personnel and notifies supervision of malfunctioning equipment.
  • Monitors and records radiation levels in hot lab, scan room storage area and patient rooms.
  • Provides staff and patient protection in accordance with prescribed radiation safety standards.
  • Maintains a daily log of radionuclide doses administered to patients. Maintains a daily log of patients to include referring physicians, tests done, diagnosis and any other pertinent information. Orders all radiopharmaceuticals daily for scheduled tests. Keeps and maintains all records required by State regulations. Must adhere to strict state and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations.
  • Explains procedure to patients and/or family members ensuring cooperation and optimal results and to reduce anxiety. Keeps waiting patients informed of any delays.
  • Performs assessments on patients of various ages and meets standard of care for all patients from infancy to geriatric.
  • Assist the patient in preparation for the procedure by fully describing the test, applying electrodes, introducing an IV and monitoring blood pressure (supine and erect). Assist physician in performing treadmill stress/Persantine tests. Injects radiopharmaceuticals at appropriate times, with strict adherence to aseptic technique and with syringe shields. Positions the patient (strict adherence to protocol must be followed) and monitors during imaging. Performs all processing of images to allow for doctorrsquo;s interpretation.
  • Serves as liaison among ordering physicians, nursing units, etc. in providing information for exam ordering, etc.
  • Maintains patient information by purging or updating patient film jackets and/or filing reports or film files to ensure accurate patient records. Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Adheres to standards for radiation safety and for appropriate waste separation and disposal of radioactive agents by performing specific tasks mandated by the NRC in order to maintain compliance with NRC license regulations.
  • Decontaminates and cleans up non-radioactive spills (i.e. blood) and radioactive spills as prescribed in the procedure manual.
  • Acquire pertinent clinical information from the patient and/or chart to assist the physician in the interpretation of the examination results, and transports patients to and from the Department of Nuclear Medicine.
  • Checks schedule of outpatient studies to assist in coordinating the dayrsquo;s procedures and checks for requisitions for studies ordered during the evening hours.
  • Assist Nuclear Medicine Supervisor in review and refinement of diagnostic procedures.
  • Complies with established personal protective equipment requirements necessary for protection against exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids, chemical disinfectants, radiation, and other hazardous substances.
  • Complies with OSHA and State regulations as they pertain to medical waste disposal. Personnel monitoring devises are to be worn at all times and monitored monthly. Lab coats are to be worn in all restricted areas.
  • May be required to perform CPR as necessary.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and in-services and maintains continuing education.
  • Rotate on-call basis as necessary for complete coverage of department.
  • Responds to emergency conditions during off-shifts regarding patient care issues by carrying a beeper and returning to the hospital as needed in compliance with hospital policy.
  • Complies with departmental attendance and departmental standards.
  • May instruct students and perform competency evaluation in Nuclear Medicine.

Qualifications:

Education:

Graduate of appropriate Nuclear Medicine Technologist program.

Experience:

Minimum of 1 year of experience in a clinical nuclear medicine department. Graduated students with certification will be considered. Requires substantial judgment to achieve optimum results and prevention of re-examination as well as frequent mental and visual attention and physical exertion in moving patients. This position requires a high degree of tact, judgment and ability to make independent decisions when necessary.

Licensure/Certification/Registration Requirements:

Nuclear Medicine certification by the ARRT and/or NMTCB.

The selected candidate will not be allowed to commence working until all three (3) are completed satisfactorily.
