About Our Lab
Our Materials Science Lab is located in Boise Idaho. We are a diverse team of experienced scientists and technicians and the essential analytical arm of the LaserJet product development as wells as other hardware product groups within Boise and around the world. We conduct materials and physical properties analysis, field failure analysis in such varied disciplines as paper and toner science, UV color stability, product air emissions, contamination identification, and reliability assessments. Our mission is to provide accurate, objective data and guidance on materials questions/problems as they arise to help make our business successful in amazing our customers with quality printers.
Material Scientist Job Description
This is an opportunity for a Material Scientist laboratory position supporting and advising various collaborative printer hardware teams around the world including: R&D, supply chain, management, production/manufacturing, marketing, service, and quality assurance teams. This is hands-on lab work. A great candidate will be proficient and perform independent investigations utilizing a wide variety of instruments to assess chemical composition and physical properties as well as using a variety of microscopy tools to assess performance of printer materials throughout their life cycle. Examples of instruments and tools include FTIR, XRF, ICP, SEM, Xray, optical, thermal. Assessed properties may include mechanical strength, hardness, surface texture, particle size distribution, melt points, glass transitions and tribology. A wide variety of conventional and specialty materials cycle are encountered. Designing and developing stress tests is part of material and system evaluations to ensure customer environment reliability. Part of the job includes conducting failure analysis (root cause investigations) and competitive intelligence forensic work. Recommendations of corrective actions and accurate risk assessment will be required and will need to be communicated effectively to suppliers and various teams across the globe. Ability to multitask, prioritize work, and plan simultaneous long term and short-term research is expected.

We want to incorporate an electrical/electronics engineer to the LES R&D Regulations department, for the areas of safety, EMC and telecommunications. The candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary and energetic development team located both in Boise and other international locations, working towards common and technically challenging objectives. Specific responsibilities for the position include the following: *Define safety strategy and translation to design requirements. Active participation in product development to influence and evaluate design for safety compliance. *Act as focal point for the program representing the interests of all regulatory areas (EMC, safety, and telecommunications), leading the rest of the team, and integrating team activities and requirements to the programs. *Review electronics, mechanics and system level designs. Influence design teams to implement best options in terms of safe and legal compliance. Design and implement test plans as required to validate designs. *Develop regulatory documentation in alignment with regulatory regional teams. Keep track of evolving standards and feedback to HP representatives on the standardization committees. Establish, maintain & promote networking with other HP organizations in this area. *Lead communications with regulatory certification agencies (UL, TUV) for consultancy and certification. Become proficient on SMT to enable on-site testing and reporting. *Collaborate with sales and operations teams for escalations/questions coming from manufacturing or from the customers in the areas of safety. The basic requirements all candidates must meet are: *Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering (Electronics/Electricity) or Electromechanical Engineering. *Effectively interact and communicate in cross-functional forums. Understanding of several disciplines schedule, define plans with dependencies, constraints and critical paths.
