The Novel Human Genetics (NHG) research unit is seeking an experienced and motivated, bench scientist to support our drug discovery efforts in Neuroinflammation/Neurodegeneration. The successful candidate will be lab-based and be responsible for conducting a variety of in vitro / ex vivo experiments to support our discovery research and portfolio projects using primary rodent neurons or iPSC-derived neurons/ astrocytes/ microglia. Candidate must have the ability to use molecular/ imaging /cell biology techniques to address scientific questions and to perform daily responsibilities. Candidate also must have a proven track record in delivering high quality and impactful data to support Go/ No Go decision. Successful candidate will have the opportunity to directly shape our discover research in Neurodegeneration and make contributions to our portfolio.

About NHG RU: The Novel Human Genetics Research Unit (NHG RU) was formed in 2019 to identify and to advance novel targets with genetic association to disease based on the foundational observation that targets with human genetic evidence supporting their causal role in the intended indication improves clinical success by two-fold. The NHG RU is therapeutically broad and complements other research units with strategic focus in immunology and oncology. The current portfolio includes projects focused on neurological diseases, including Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, ALS, Pain, in addition to metabolic diseases. This goal is enabled through strategic external and GSK-internal partnerships.

This role will provide YOU the opportunity to lead key activities to progress YOUR career. These responsibilities include some of the following:

  • Establish, optimize, and characterize cellular models (2D &3D) using human iPSC-derived and/or primary/immortalized human/rodent neuronal complex cultures to support drug discovery research in neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation

  • Utilize gene editing methodologies such as CRISPR/Cas9 in iPSCs and cellular models to validate targets and/or to support lead optimization projects for drug discovery

  • Conduct pharmacological studies with an array of techniques including next gen. sequencing/scRNAseq, high-content imaging (OperaPhenix), immunoassays (ELISA, MSD, Quanterix), TaqMan, Seahorse, mass spectrometry, confocal microscopy amongst others

  • Independently execute laboratory experiments, conduct statistically supported data analysis, and deliver results in a timely manner to enable informed decision making

  • Clearly record and communicate study results at internal and external meetings

  • Commit to continual improvement by reading and applying the latest scientific literature, methodologies and technologies

  • Comply with all standards and practices of data integrity, ethics, and safety

  • Hands-on experience with genome editing techniques such as CRISPR/Cas9, molecular and cell biology

  • Experience with human iPSC cell differentiation into neurons, microglia, and astrocytes

  • Experience in elucidating the cellular and molecular mechanisms of novel genes functions

  • Demonstrated skills in utilizing 3D in vitro models to profile cellular phenotypes

  • Proven track records with the use of Genome/Transcriptome analysis to facilitate basic research

  • Ability to handle small laboratory animals and to perform tissue harvest for ex vivo experiment

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • 2+ years pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry research experience working in matrixed drug discovery project teams

  • Scientific research experience in Alzheimer's disease

  • Experienced in assay development and high throughput and/or genome-wide screening
