We are seeking highly motivated scientist to join the Pharmaceutical Development team at our Upper Providence site, in the suburbs of Philadelphia. In this position you will use your technical knowledge and abilities to implement process analytical technology (PAT) and associated data interpretation and modeling to generate process knowledge for primary (API) and secondary (drug product) that contributes to the development and deployment of state-of-the-art processes and technologies to enable delivery of our medicines.

Process Engineering and Analytics delivers technical expertise to support the development of small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and drug product manufacturing processes at GSK. Our scientists work with project teams to perform laboratory studies and support plant campaigns to ensure API and drug product of appropriate quality and quantity are produced. The key focus of this position will be to implement process analytical technology (PAT) and associated data interpretation and modeling to generate process knowledge API and drug product that contributes to the development and deployment of state-of-the-art processes and technologies to enable delivery of our medicines. The role is fast-paced and dynamic as you may be working on a number of multi-disciplinary teams.

This role will provide YOU the opportunity to contribute to analytical development and to progress YOUR career. Your responsibilities include some of the following...

  • Work safely, effectively and collaboratively on multi-disciplinary development teams including Chemists, Engineers, Analysts, Modelers and Material Scientists to deliver work packages required to understand API and drug product unit operations for effective scale-up

  • Learn and undertake setting up, operating and maintaining PAT equipment to collect process data for developing PAT methods (e.g. Mid IR, Raman, NIR, MS, HPLC, Particle Size, pH, conductivity, etc.)

  • Design and execute laboratory experiments for online trending of relevant process parameters in various unit operations with attention to safety. Interpret spectral and other analytical data. Develop and apply statistical and multivariate chemometric methods along with engineering and modeling principles as needed to analyze data. Document all work with high quality according to GSK policies and procedures.

  • Interpret experimental results and related information to generate clear process analytical knowledge that can be used to identify potential issues, facilitate optimization and control, and help provide solutions that ensure robust operation of API and drug product processes

  • Create and deliver effective technical presentations and written reports

  • Design and implement experimental plans to support new research directions and novel strategies to achieve project or department goals, such as rapid kinetic and crystallization modeling platforms.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • BS in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related pharmaceutical degree

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • 1-3 years of industry experience in chemical or pharmaceutical manufacture

  • Experience with PAT, other analytical methods, pharmaceutical unit operations, and/or systems modeling

  • Previous contributions to multi-disciplinary pharmaceutical product development teams

  • Working knowledge of organic chemistry

  • Awareness of Quality by Design (QbD) principles and/or risk-based approaches to pharmaceutical development

  • Effective oral and written communication skills

  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems
