Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Engineers/scientists in this role are responsible for researching medical-surgical supplies or implants, identifying key differentiating product specifications, and supporting quality control of product information. Additional responsibilities include refreshing device product information to keep the CrossCheq database current and supporting client requests. CrossCheq is an industry-leading, unbiased database and service that allows healthcare facilities to quickly identify alternate products that are functionally equivalent.

General:

  • Must be able to conduct all projects and responsibilities with minimal supervision after completion of training period.
  • Must demonstrate independent thinking with a clear, logical line of reasoning; issues must be well thought out and clearly presented.

Administrative:

  • Maintains complete records for all assigned projects, including notes of discussions or telephone conversations.
  • Read relevant technical journals and literature related to activities, and maintains information files on designated topics.
  • Participates in recruiting and applicant interviewing processes.
  • Updates supervisors on projects and problems on a regular basis.
  • Maintains an effective personal filing system and observes institutional filing procedures.
  • Reviews reports, abstracts, and drafts according to expertise.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist in responding to CrossCheq client questions
  • Support clients interested in custom product evaluation service
    • Participate in calls with clients
    • Develop test protocols or literature search strategies
    • Investigate client questions through testing or review of literature
    • Prepare project reports for clients
  • Investigate client-generated medical device problem reports and provide recommendations for corrective measures.
  • Assists other ECRI personnel by providing information in areas of specialized experience or knowledge.
Qualifications

Job Requirements

  1. Must have strong Research and Analytical skills to learn quickly about medical devices and to form effective judgments about Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for application and purchase of those medical devices. Will work with other ECRI Institute experts to enable rapid learning. Will apply reasoning to develop KPIs for assigned devices. Will apply analysis to score all products in a sector on each KPI.
  2. Must have knowledge of and interest in Medical Consumable products and Physician Preference Items (pacemakers, Internal defibrillators, orthopedic implants, others).
  3. Ability to manage several small projects in parallel is required. Being detail-oriented and possessing problem-solving skill with the ability to think innovatively is important to success in this position.
  4. Clinical experience in a hospital or outpatient surgical center is considered especially helpful.
  5. Presentation skills needed to explain KPIs for a product type and rationale supporting the selected KPIs to others on team.
  6. Able to work effectively with other groups/teams within ECRI Institute - communicate well, meet commitments made, work well in a team environment to meet common goals. Will sometimes be called upon to lead cross-functional teams.
  7. Familiarity with medical supply purchasing practices and value analysis in a hospital or surgical center is helpful.

Experience:

  • Zero to 5 years' work experience in relevant technical field. Knowledge of the use of medical technologies in clinical practice is helpful.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Should have proven track record of dependable, reliable, and thorough performance and be able to manage changing priorities for multiple simultaneous tasks.
  • Will consider candidates with broad range of engineering/science or clinical experience (e.g., pharmaceutical industry, medical device industry, or clinical background including nursing, advanced practice nursing, physician assistant) who may be interested in applying their knowledge in a non-clinical position.

Education: Graduate of an accredited college with Bachelor's, or Master's, preferably in basic sciences; physics; engineering; or a related healthcare background /clinical science.

Computer Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
