Main Purpose of Job
To determine where and how to invest in our subscription information products, as well as in new products, to provide the best return on investment for the life sciences business, and to coordinate with others to oversee the approval and implementation of those investments.
This person will work closely with product development leads, technical architects, customer-facing staff, and key potential and current customers to determine, prioritize and oversee implementation of product investments, including new products, as well asfunctionality and content to existing products. This includes identifying and prioritizing the opportunities to grow revenue and customer loyalty from the business markets in life sciences.
This person will be primarily responsible for key deliverables such as product roadmaps, business cases and marketing requirement documents;key business metrics such as capital investment rate of return, mid to long term product revenue growth; and other product performance (market share, usage, attrition). This role is crucial organizationally to achieving consensus around appropriate product investments and driving them forward, providing the 'the message of the market' to many functions within the Thomson Reuters life sciences business.
This position will be responsible for the Thomson Pharma Partnering Forecast and Deals modules, with general focus on Business Development & Licensing market. The target users in this market include information professionals, competitive intelligence, mergers & acquisition, corporate strategy and business development & licensing.. It may also include expansion markets such as generics, financial firms, and academic institutions.
This role reports to the Director of Product Strategy, Business Solutions.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Understand and communicate internally (or externally as appropriate) the current product and content capabilities including distribution mechanisms (web portal, data feeds, API), content (depth, breadth, sources, and editorial policy), positioning (messaging, pricing, discounting policy), product differentiators (features, functions), and legal/policy constraints (third party agreements, customer agreements, regulatory requirements).
  • Meet with potential customers, customer users, buyers, and recent evaluators to discover key unmet needs and to translate implications to technical innovations that could grow revenue and market share. Develop relationships with key industry thought leaders.
  • Provide input to product marketing manager on go-to-market plans, including product messaging, marketing communications and pricing.
  • Review all sources of market feedback (e.g., market research, win/loss analyses, satisfaction surveys, competitive write-ups)
  • Review emerging technology capabilities (e.g. search engine, visualization tools, report writing) and determine relevance to strategic goals of product.
  • Determine the growth potential of the product and manage technical investments based on lifecycle curve. Identify the need for reduced product investment; execute product retirements and customer migrations.
  • Define measurable commercial goals of new product releases, whether growth, usage, customer satisfaction or user migration.
  • Create (as primary author) product assessments and SWOT analysis relative to competitors and industry trends
  • Create (as primary author) and manage the three-year product roadmap. Determine phasing of growth strategy by working with product development to package new features into product releases, balancing cost, date and quality.
  • Create (as primary author) business cases including P&L financials.
  • Create (as primary author) marketing requirement documents (MRDs) for new product releases in accordance with software development lifecycle process
  • Create (as primary author) use case scenarios for new product releases in accordance with software development lifecycle process
  • Create (as primary author) user personas for individual products
  • Create (as primary author) a commercial status dashboard for all business cases
  • Oversee implementation of new releases to ensure desired commercial outcomes are achieved including balance of scope/date/cost
  • Assess outcome of new product releases and report to executive management
  • Identify technical partnerships and maintain relevant specific technical relationships
  • Establish and maintain intellectual property rights

Qualifications
  • MUST HAVE: A strong information technology technical background and experience working with information technology
  • MUST HAVE: Experience discovering unmet needs in a particular market and proposing an innovative product enhancement, new product, or product strategy change
  • MUST HAVE: Excellent consensus building and facilitation skills.
  • Significant experience writing market requirement documents, User Personas, or User Scenarios in a product development lifecycle setting
  • Significant experience rationalizing and prioritizing technical investments.
  • Significant understanding of relevant pharmaceutical industry uses, buyers and industry trends
  • Experience in developing a business case, including financial P&L
  • Experience in developing a product strategy to achieve competitive differentiation of a product.
  • Experience in driving and monitoring commercial success of a new product or product release
  • Demonstrated ability to pursue customer-driven development.
  • Demonstrated ability to process large amounts of conflicting data and drive forward decisions based on an objective fact base.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships across a wide range of diverse competencies and organizational levels.
  • Familiarity with the sources of revenue and cost in a commercial content product environment
  • Excellent team player
  • Excellent oral and written English communications.
  • Ability to travel internationally to North America, Europe and potentially APAC - 20% travel estimated.
