Position Description

The Auburn School is a private day school with a powerful social mission:Grow the social and academic potential of bright students with social and communication challenges.The Auburn School serves bright students with challenges in the areas of communication, social skills, pragmatic language, and organization. This includes students with Asperger’s syndrome/ASD, PDD-NOS, NVLD or ADHD.

Auburn currently serves elementary and middle school students and will grow to serve younger students with an early intervention pre-school model as well as 9th grade students. Our founding team includes highly distinguished national, state and local education leaders and professionals. Through significant outreach efforts, Auburn has already extensive support from key leaders in the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia professional and education communities.

Auburn staff work in a collaborative environment to implement our unique, integrated academic and social curriculum in a highly professional work environment that brings teachers, related services providers and instructional assistants together on behalf of student success.


We are actively recruiting a Part-time Adaptive PE Teacher. The position will be responsible for developing a PE elective, creating an alternative and highly motivating PE program to meet the fitness and social needs of students, providing daily PE lessons for K-8 students who need structure and social support and performing other school duties assigned by the Head of School.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree required
  • A minimum of 3 years of teaching experience, preferably in a special education setting
  • Experience with K-8 students with characteristics of Asperger’s Syndrome, ADHD, and other atypical learners, highly preferred
  • Expertise with fitness needs, developing curriculum, and working with a team of educators strongly preferred
  • Sound understanding of, and sensitivity to, children and adolescents with special learning needs
  • Experience with differentiated and inquiry based instruction, multiage classrooms, and behavior management
  • Commitment to professional excellence
  • Enthusiastic about the opportunity to teach students with social and communication challenges
